Quick answer

How do you calculate GST?

To add GST, multiply the price by (1 + rate ÷ 100): ₹10,000 at 18% becomes ₹11,800, with ₹1,800 GST split as ₹900 CGST and ₹900 SGST. To remove GST from an inclusive price, divide by (1 + rate ÷ 100): ₹11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000.

  • Main GST slabs: 5% and 18%, plus 40% for luxury and sin goods
  • Add GST: price × (1 + rate/100)
  • Remove GST: inclusive price ÷ (1 + rate/100)

What is the GST formula?

GST amount = price × rate ÷ 100 · Inclusive price = price × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Price before GST = inclusive price ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)

What are the GST slabs in 2026?

  • 0% (nil): essentials such as fresh food, individual health and life insurance
  • 5%: everyday goods, most items from the old 12% slab
  • 18%: the standard rate for most goods and services, including most items from the old 28% slab
  • 40%: luxury and sin goods such as aerated drinks and large cars
  • Special rates: 3% on gold, 0.25% on rough diamonds

How do the new GST rates for 2026 work out on a bill?

The new GST rates came in with GST 2.0 on 22 September 2025 and still apply in 2026. The rate for a particular item can change by notification, so check the latest CBIC rate list for anything unusual. Here is how ₹1,000 before GST works out at each main slab, for a sale within one state:

GST on ₹1,000 at the 5%, 18% and 40% rates
GST rateGSTPrice with GSTCGST + SGST
5%₹50₹1,050₹25 + ₹25
18%₹180₹1,180₹90 + ₹90
40%₹400₹1,400₹200 + ₹200

For a sale from one state to another, the same GST is charged as IGST instead. ₹5,000 at 18% across states carries ₹900 of IGST, for a total of ₹5,900.

How do you use this GST calculator for India?

  • Choose Add GST when you have a price before tax, or Remove GST when the amount already includes it, such as an MRP
  • Enter the amount and pick a rate, or type a custom one
  • Tick inter-state sale if the buyer is in another state, to see IGST in place of CGST and SGST

The GST calculator shows the price before GST, the GST amount, the total and the tax split.

Tip: Don’t take 18% of an inclusive price to find the GST. On ₹1,180 that gives ₹212.40, but the GST inside it is only ₹180. Divide by 1.18 first, as the Remove GST mode does.

Frequently asked questions

What are the GST rates in 2026?

Since GST 2.0 took effect on 22 September 2025, the main slabs are 5% and 18%, with 40% for luxury and sin goods. Some items are nil-rated, and gold attracts 3%. The old 12% and 28% slabs were merged into these.

How do I add 18% GST to a price?

Multiply the price by 1.18. For example, ₹10,000 + 18% GST = ₹11,800, of which ₹1,800 is GST.

How do I remove GST from an inclusive price?

Divide the inclusive price by (1 + GST rate ÷ 100). For example, ₹11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000 before GST, so the GST is ₹1,800.
