In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is customary at sit-down restaurants. In India, check whether a service charge is already on the bill.

Quick answer

How do you calculate a tip and split the bill?

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage, add it to the bill, and divide by the number of people. An $84.50 bill with an 18% tip comes to $99.71, so each of three people pays about $33.24. Rounding up each share to $34 makes the total $102.

  • Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100
  • US norm: 15–20% of the pre-tax bill at restaurants
  • Per person = (bill + tip) ÷ people

How much should you tip?

  • Sit-down restaurant (US): 15–20%, 18–20% for good service
  • Food delivery (US): 15–20%, with a few dollars minimum
  • Bar (US): about $1–2 a drink or 15–20% of the tab
  • India: optional; around 5–10% if no service charge is added

Customs vary between cities and change over time, so treat these as a guide rather than a rule.

How is a 15%, 18% or 20% tip calculated?

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100. Then add the tip to the bill for your total.

Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100 · Total = bill + tip

On a $150 bill, the common tips work out like this:

Tips on a $150 bill
TipTip amountTotal
15%$22.50$172.50
18%$27.00$177.00
20%$30.00$180.00

How do you split the bill between friends?

Enter the bill total, pick a tip and set how many people are paying. The tip calculator adds the tip and divides the total evenly.

Say four friends have a dinner bill of $129.90, which includes $9.90 of tax. If you enter $9.90 in the “Tax included in bill” box, the 20% tip is worked out on the $120 pre-tax amount, so it is $24. The total is $153.90 and each person pays about $38.48. Tick “Round each person’s share up” and each share becomes $39, the total $156, and the tip rises to $26.10.

Tip: An even split suits a shared meal. If one person ordered much more, work out each share of the bill first and add the tip percentage to each.

The same steps work in rupees. A ₹2,400 dinner with a 10% tip split three ways is ₹880 each.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip in the US?

At sit-down restaurants in the US, 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is customary, with 18–20% common for good service. For counter service a tip is optional.

How do I calculate an 18% tip?

Multiply the bill by 0.18. On an $84.50 bill, an 18% tip is $15.21, making the total $99.71.

Etiquette guides usually suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount. Enter the tax shown on your bill and the calculator will tip on the amount before tax.
