Quick answer

When will I retire at 60?

Under the central government rule (FR 56), your retirement date is the last day of the month in which you turn 60. Someone born on 20 June 1968 retires on 30 June 2028. If you were born on the 1st of a month, you retire at the end of the previous month, so a 1 June 1968 birth date retires on 31 May 2028.

  • Central govt: retirement age 60, last day of the birth month
  • Born on the 1st: retire on the last day of the previous month
  • Private jobs: often 58 or 60, sometimes on the birthday itself

How is the retirement date worked out?

Government service rules don’t retire you on your birthday. Under FR 56 you retire on the afternoon of the last day of the month in which you reach the retirement age.

Retirement date = last day of (birth month + retirement age years); born on the 1st → last day of the month before

Examples at age 60

  • Born 20 June 1968 → retires 30 June 2028
  • Born 1 June 1968 → retires 31 May 2028

What is the retirement age in India?

  • Central government: 60 for most employees
  • State governments: commonly 58, 60 or 62, depending on the state
  • Private sector: usually 58 or 60, set by the employer

What is a superannuation date?

Your superannuation date is the day you retire on reaching the retirement age in your service rules. It’s the date printed in your service book and used for pension and gratuity paperwork. The retirement date calculator shows it along with the weekday it falls on, your age today and how much service you have left.

For someone born on 20 June 1968, retiring at 60 under FR 56, the superannuation date is 30 June 2028. On 21 October 2026, that leaves 1 year, 8 months and 9 days of service, or 618 days.

Tip: Use the date of birth in your service record, not one celebrated at home. Your official retirement date follows the recorded date.

How does the rule differ for government and private jobs?

Choose the rule that matches your employer. The difference is usually a few days, but it changes your last working day and last salary.

  • Government (FR 56): born 20 June 1968, retire at 60 on 30 June 2028, the last day of the birth month
  • On the birthday itself: the same person retires on 20 June 2028

Private employers often follow one of these two rules, and state governments may set their own retirement age. Check your appointment letter or HR policy, and treat the result as a guide until your employer confirms it.

Frequently asked questions

How is the retirement date of a central government employee calculated?

Under FR 56, a central government employee retires on the afternoon of the last day of the month in which they reach 60. If the date of birth is the 1st of a month, they retire on the last day of the previous month.

What is the retirement age in India?

It is 60 for most central government employees. Many state governments use 58, 60 or 62, and private companies commonly use 58 or 60. Some posts, such as university teachers and doctors in some services, go up to 65.

Why does someone born on the 1st retire a month earlier?

By legal convention a person reaches a given age on the day before their birthday. Someone born on 1 June reaches 60 on 31 May, so under FR 56 they retire at the end of May.

Can I calculate retirement for a private job?

Yes. Choose “On the birthday itself” if your employer retires you on your birthday, and set the retirement age your company uses.

How much service do I have left until retirement?

The calculator shows the service left in years, months and days, plus the total days, from today to your retirement date. For someone born on 15 August 1975 retiring at 60, it is 8 years, 10 months and 10 days from 21 October 2026.

Can I use the calculator for state government employees?

Yes. Set the retirement age your state uses, such as 58, 60 or 62. Keep the month-end rule if your state follows the same convention as FR 56, or choose the birthday option if it doesn’t.
